I *hate* to sit in waiting rooms because other people have been running late. It is even trickier with an impatient small child along, so during my second pregnancy scheduled most of my appointments for either the first of the day or the first appointment after lunch. With no one running late before me (and I was usually on time) it meant that I was able to be seen almost immediately when I arrived. I also try & schedule for the first of the day with my dentist’s office for bi-yearly teeth cleaning. So far, his has worked out nicely & offices appreciate it when you run on time.

We purge our fridge on Thursday nights (Friday is garbage day). Anything color that is “too natural” (moldy) goes out. Things that have been “lost” in the far recesses of the fridge are pulled forward for easier access and expiration dates are checked – make sure to check the YEAR as well. About once a month we check the pantry as well. We’ve also been meal planning which, in theory, has helped keep these problems to a minimum.

If you want to do something awesome for Earth Day, do yourself & the Earth a huge favor and stop getting junk mail!!! I found this site about two years ago and so far we’ve opted out of 50+ different catalogues (I had no idea we’d been subscribed to so many), and we hardly get ANY junk mail anymore!

A few of my favorites & their uses:

lingerie bags, never loose another toddler sock in the washer/dryer
cork trivets, double as coasters, protect furniture & work on the table & counter tops as well
acrylic tea box, to eliminate the collection of 1/2 full boxes of tea bags
a large bag of rags, to clean the messes too nasty for regular dishtowels

I also use old maps for wrapping paper. Either street maps of old atlases. Good for frequent travelers.

Once you’ve cleared out what you don’t need, it leaves space for new things you do need but haven’t had a place for. I’m hoping when I discipline myself to clean out my kitchen cupboards, I’ll have space for a long-awaited bread making machine, to be able to make nutritious bread for my family. Martha

We had years of buying candy for trick or treat. I kept feeling more and more guilty about the candy we were giving out. So, we switched to small boxes of raisins. They seem to go very well, especially with the parents.

I tell all the children, “Be sure and scrub your teeth — AND floss before you go to bed tonight — and every night!”

Thank you for the great reminder, Leah! Your post was a wakeup call to reexamine my brushes. While my ancient powder brush (a freebee from some store gift bag) did offer some exfoliating benefits because it had worn down a scraggly, scratchy mess, I was inspired to replace it with quality natural bristles that will last for ages. What a treat for my face this morning! Thanks!

Great tips for cleaning and organizing the hairdryer. Ironically I just cleaned mine this weekend. When I vacuum, I use the attachment to suck up the lint and dust on my hairdryer vent. Works great and is so quick!

What a fantastic idea for a blog! So needed! I love organization, but am not as organized as I would like to be. Starting my own home soon makes this blog so timely. I find it’s much easier to start a certain way than have to change routines later. As I read along the latest few blog entries I kept calling over to my fiance…we need to register for a shredder, we need to register for a dish drainer! Plus, your way of expressing this advice is very fun. I want dish forts!

This advice extends to members serving in the armed forces as well. A box packed of homemade goodies, magazines, small toys, a thoughtful card and stickers goes a long way in the middle of Iraq or Afghanistan, and it is a great -and very direct- way to support the troops.

Because my husband and I spend much of the summer taking weekend trips where there is water (Maine, Cape Cod, Berkshires of Western MA), we like to take our bathing suits with us, in case we have a chance to get in the water. Rather than pack them every time, we have a “bathing suit bag” where our suits and beach towels always live that we can just put in the car. There’s a little extra room in the bag, if we want to add our hats and raincoats, too. My toiletry collection is also always packed with travel duplicates of things I use here at home, so I can grab that and go.

Leah! Loving your posts – definately inspiring me to get more organized! I love tote bags. Since I work from home, there are times when I want to move to different rooms in the house, or set up laptop up in the garden, so I use a tote bag as my office! It’s great – fits my laptop, charger, books, phone etc perfectly well and I can happily carry it from room to room!

I enjoy reading your suggestions, and want to report that your Blog on Summer ideas inspired me to place a post-it on our bathroom mirror:

Check out local art fairs
Visit Library
Visit local museum shows
Plan a camping trip with the family
Visit a beach

My husband read the post-it while brushing his teeth, and has been supporting these ideas. So far, we’ve enjoyed a family camping trip, relished a local art fair (and made some good purchases,) and visited the French Impressionist exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Visits to the beach and library are coming up.

Thanks for enriching our summer!

Thanks for featuring the public library. As a librarian, I am an enthusiastic library supporter.
I just wanted to add that libraries now have a wide variety of online resources that are available
24/7. If you wanted to learn about appliance ratings at 10:00 at night, you could access the library’s magazine database and read a full text Consumer Reports article. In addition, many libraries now have
audio and digital books that can be downloaded to your computer and various mobile devices.
All this is in addition to the resources available- books, magazines, books on cd, music cds, dvds and of course, help from the librarian.

Dryer sheets are also handy for removing static in clingy clothes. Simply rub the dryer sheet on the inside of said clingy clothes, and voila! No more static cling. I recommend using eco-friendly dryer sheets for this (and at all times…or just use reusable dryer balls in your dryer and stop using sheets altogether) because regular dryer sheets are filled with all kinds of crazy chemicals.

Hmm…laundering, yes. Buying all new sheets for your home…not so much. (Ouch$$$) Cotton sheets, whether flannel or smooth, are appropriate for all seasons. Good quality, high threadcount sheets supposedly help regulate body temperatures while you are sleeping, whatever style. Also, not all mattresses benefit from flipping. Owners should check out their model before they commit to flip.

Great post – and your writing style makes it feel like we´re actually in a conversation about this topic! One twist – I like taking my leftovers (after heating them up in our office microwave) to the local park or rooftop patio at my office to be away from the computer and savor the wonderfulness of the meal. This usually makes me even more productive when I return to my work after lunch.
