This advice extends to members serving in the armed forces as well. A box packed of homemade goodies, magazines, small toys, a thoughtful card and stickers goes a long way in the middle of Iraq or Afghanistan, and it is a great -and very direct- way to support the troops.

Because my husband and I spend much of the summer taking weekend trips where there is water (Maine, Cape Cod, Berkshires of Western MA), we like to take our bathing suits with us, in case we have a chance to get in the water. Rather than pack them every time, we have a "bathing suit bag" where our suits and beach towels always live that we can just put in the car. There's a little extra room in the bag, if we want to add our hats and raincoats, too. My toiletry collection is also always packed with travel duplicates of things I use here at home, so I can grab that and go.

Leah! Loving your posts - definately inspiring me to get more organized! I love tote bags. Since I work from home, there are times when I want to move to different rooms in the house, or set up laptop up in the garden, so I use a tote bag as my office! It's great - fits my laptop, charger, books, phone etc perfectly well and I can happily carry it from room to room!

Thanks for all of your posts! The picture of this one reminded me of buying calendars around September (or the New Year). When it gets closer to the school year, could you do a blog recommending different types of calendars. I am always looking for new ones that help with the organizational bliss! (I am currently using an annual moleskin calendar, which I love.) Thanks!

Leah,

I enjoy reading your suggestions, and want to report that your Blog on Summer ideas inspired me to place a post-it on our bathroom mirror:

Check out local art fairs
Visit Library
Visit local museum shows
Plan a camping trip with the family
Visit a beach

My husband read the post-it while brushing his teeth, and has been supporting these ideas. So far, we've enjoyed a family camping trip, relished a local art fair (and made some good purchases,) and visited the French Impressionist exhibit at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. Visits to the beach and library are coming up.

Thanks for enriching our summer!

Leah,
Thanks for featuring the public library. As a librarian, I am an enthusiastic library supporter.
I just wanted to add that libraries now have a wide variety of online resources that are available
24/7. If you wanted to learn about appliance ratings at 10:00 at night, you could access the library's magazine database and read a full text Consumer Reports article. In addition, many libraries now have
audio and digital books that can be downloaded to your computer and various mobile devices.
All this is in addition to the resources available- books, magazines, books on cd, music cds, dvds and of course, help from the librarian.
Check it out!

Dryer sheets are also handy for removing static in clingy clothes. Simply rub the dryer sheet on the inside of said clingy clothes, and voila! No more static cling. I recommend using eco-friendly dryer sheets for this (and at all times...or just use reusable dryer balls in your dryer and stop using sheets altogether) because regular dryer sheets are filled with all kinds of crazy chemicals.

Hmm...laundering, yes. Buying all new sheets for your home...not so much. (Ouch$$$) Cotton sheets, whether flannel or smooth, are appropriate for all seasons. Good quality, high threadcount sheets supposedly help regulate body temperatures while you are sleeping, whatever style. Also, not all mattresses benefit from flipping. Owners should check out their model before they commit to flip.

Leah,

Great post - and your writing style makes it feel like we´re actually in a conversation about this topic! One twist - I like taking my leftovers (after heating them up in our office microwave) to the local park or rooftop patio at my office to be away from the computer and savor the wonderfulness of the meal. This usually makes me even more productive when I return to my work after lunch.

I remembered this post when I came across these instructions for homemade lunch box ice packs. This is one of the few truly simple DIY projects I've come across, and a great way to give any lunch a more personal touch (while keeping it cool).

If you are a city dweller, now is the time of year to have those plastic "rocks" that don't fool anyone but rodents refreshed. Schedule your biannual outdoor exterminator visit.

Breaking upward out of our special worlds into to new and greater ones! How creative, how inspiring! I also love the fact that Theodore Geisel was refused by none less than 27 publishers before he actually could present Dr. Seuss to all of us!!!! Just think of how upward and inspired he had to be to go on until he realized his expressions of joy!!!

What great ideas for organizing those things that spice up your life!!! Also, thank you for introducing me to Penzey's. We have a Penzey's shop locally in Menlo Park, CA. Cook's Illustrated recently declared Penzey's as the best purveyor of spices in this corner of the circle!!! If you can't go to a Penzey's or order on line from them Bassett and Morton spices are a close second.

I thought I'm the only one who have done that :-)
I have similar documents for years now.
I separated one big file into few smaller with different pieces of info, personal for each of the family member, banks, life insurance, etc., and list of i-net accounts with passwords.
All docs are ver helpful, especialy for my hubby, who has memory of butterfly for that kind of stuff :-)
Since all computers in the house are in my jurisdiction, my fave is the last one.
Find some time to create such file, you won't regret that!!

Good thoughts, Leah! I know as a frequent hostess, having guests who are willing to pitch in a little bit can make all the difference between a hectic weekend and a pleasant time. I have one set of frequent guests who will sit and read while DH and I cook or pull out/put away their beds. I spend much of their visits fuming about the lack of help. On a recent visit, I decided to stop hinting and just ask for help, putting one of my guests in charge of fixing a portion of our meal. He was happy to put down his book, I'd just needed to ask!

For Windows XP, follow the directions at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307877
For OSX, follow the directions at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1578

Hope that helps, Amanda!

Just as a side note, I, too, was one for removing my name from mail lists and getting frustrated with extra mail. That was before I realized how many people we're keeping in business simply by keeping our mouths closed and our recycle bins open. Not only are we helping the recycle people and paper people, but we're also keeping writers, editors, managers, and (most importantly to me), ink salesmen in business. The printing business is a dying art, and if there's anything we can do to help one another keep our jobs (and my dad's for as long as the pigment business will last), it is greatly appreciated by the business and the people's families. So I complain less (always a plus) and deal with the mail as it comes in, but I like to think that I'm helping my dad a little more by keeping my name on those lists.

Check about donating them to your local public library too! They often use donated magazines to round out their collections or they sell them (super cheap!) for much needed funds. Also- if you have a scanner, just scan the articles and then organize them in a folder on your computer. Less paper!

Thanks for this helpful post, Leah! I've really enjoyed reading your fun and useful organizational tips.

Something we've also done when sorting through our mail (especially credit card offers or other unsolicited mailings) is to tear off or separate any parts that have our personal information on them (address, phone number, etc) and shred, tear up, or black the information out with a permanent marker before recycling them. That way we won't get additional unwanted mailings--and it gives us peace of mind that the mail we receive (and the information in it) is private and not easily available for others to see or use in a way we wouldn't want. This is also helpful for drafts of letters, projects, etc--anything we create or receive. Once someone found on the street and returned a draft of something I had written but had definitely recycled a few weeks before. That was unusual, of course, but made me more mindful of how I securely dispose of information. Just an additional thought. :)

Keep up the great work, and many thanks!

Thanks for your comment. As is the case with any post, readers will pick and choose what suggestions and ideas work for them. The beauty about living an organized life is that you get to decide what does - and does not - contribute to your own version of logistical and organizational bliss...and that can look very different from one person to the next.

Some people who mail a lot of holiday cards send different types to their various networks (family, friend, professional, etc). They may find it helpful to take note of which card types were sent to which networks to keep the process easy in the future...

Thanks, again, for your comment!

No offense, but this seems like overload. Making note of what kind of holiday cards you sent? Why? If I can't remember, no one else will, either. Sometimes people get TOO organized, which can be as stressful as being disorganized!

Thanks for your practical ideas--so helpful! I've found another really creative way to recycle beautiful holiday greeting cards received each year (not the photo kind, though). I use my scrapbooking circle and oval templates with their cutters, or special-edge scissors such as pinking shears, to make holiday gift tags to use the next year. Cut out the shape desired (making sure there's no writing on the reverse side), then use a hole puncher and add a thin ribbon or yarn as a tie. Voila! I love to do this activity in the New Year as it only takes a few minutes!

Leah, I think your ideas are all very useful. Having a checklist is especially helpful because even when I try to be superorganized, things do fall through the cracks. Your blog is great and I'm so impressed with your organizational skills.

Thanks Leah! One site I've found to be quite helpful is http://www.packwhiz.com. It's a great place to hone packing lists for various kinds of trips over time. It also gets you started with suggestions based on a very simple questionnaire about the trip. That, combined with your spreadsheet, will make an excellent start to any packing list. I also find it very helpful to take stock as I'm unpacking from a trip of the items I did not use. (Less comfortable shoes come to mind as one of the big ones.) Then I can go back into packwhiz and delete those items for that kind of trip, making my bag that much lighter and easier to close.

I actually did the call-ahead thing today with a store at the mall. They quickly found the items I wanted and set them aside for me. When the associate returned to the phone after finding the items, however, she commented on how busy the store was and that people were following her around. I felt so grateful she took the time for me! Like you suggested, I made good on the time I'd arrive to pick up the item, and it was waiting for me. Good thing I called ahead, too... they only received 4 of the items in stock and had already been told they wouldn't be getting any more until mid-January. GREAT suggestions-- very useful, practical, and true!

Hi Leah!

My mom plans all her dinners, and I hope someday to follow that example. So excited about your blog! It's beautiful. And I love Jonathan's pictures.
